Implementation in DC
The Office of the State Superintendent of Education is committed to providing students with a rigorous education. Our academic standards raise the bar for students and teachers, and enhancing the quality of education in the District.
Standards for DC
We adopted the Common Core State Standards because our students deserve to graduate from high school ready to be successful in college, careers and life. Before Common Core, students in different states received dissimilar instruction, making it difficult to discuss their performance across state lines. Common Core provides educators and students the opportunity to share experiences and best practices and levels the academic playing field for all students.
Common Core ensures that our students get no less than our best.
In addition to Common Core State Standards, DC has recently adopted Next Generation Science Standards and maintains separate educational standards for social studies, arts and other important subjects.
During the 2014-2015 school year the District of Columbia will replace the DC CAS assessment with new assessments aligned to the Common Core.
